HISTORY

Sinapi Aba Trust (also referred to as "Sinapi, SAT or the Company" is a Christian Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) established in 1994 as one of the implementing partners of the Opportunity International Network (OI) – an International Christian Non-governmental Organization with headquarters in Chicago, US.

The company was formed to primarily provide small and micro-credit services to viable small and micro enterprises which lack financial assistance from the formal banking institutions due to obvious reasons such as lack of adequate collateral security.

The name Sinapi Aba, which is the local name of the biblical mustard seed (Matt.13: 31-32) was adopted because it depicts the magnitude and potentials of the assistance that the organization provides to its clients if those who receive the assistance manage it with prayer, commitment, Integrity, honesty and hard work.

A series of preliminary meetings were held among some of the leading members of Christian Life Center (CLC) who brought in the idea for the formation of the trust as part of the church’s mission in Ghana before the final meeting at which Sinapi was born.

However, before the birthday meeting, the formation of a similar organization had already been conceived in the minds of some of the founding fathers.  Upon several meetings and discussions, the company was finally birthed at a meeting held between Messes Larry Reed (OI), Jonathan Wilson and Rev. Davis Freeman (Board Chairman of SAT) in 1994.

The background of Sinapi also relates to the fact that, Ghana possesses one of the vibrant informal sector in Africa.  In Ghana and most especially in the urban centers, almost every home has a small business attached to it.

This depicts the existence of entrepreneurial spirit among the people but lack of financial assistance has crippled most of these enterprises whose contributions to the growth and development of Ghana cannot be overlooked.

MISSION STATEMENT

The company’s mission is to serve as the Mustard Seed through which opportunities for enterprise development and income generation are provided to the economically disadvantaged but active poor to transform their lives.

In pursuing this mission our goal is to be the finest, most effective and efficient leading non-governmental microfinance institution in Ghana.  For this reason, Sinapi delivers a broad range of services that meet clients’ needs at reasonable professional fees and interest rates, which are competitive and consistent with our market expectations and efforts towards financial sustainability.

VISION STATEMENT

Sinapi’s vision is to become an institution dedicated to the building of a nation under Almighty God where the strong help the weak and all the people have the dignity of providing for themselves, their families, their church and the community.
In pursuing this vision, our aim is to be the market leader in the provision of micro-credit services in Ghana and a standard by which other institutions in the microfinance industry measure performance.

This has become the company’s corporate conscience, which helps to eliminate short-term thinking.  It also encourages every staff to be acutely aware of his/her role towards the full realization of this vision and in serving and satisfying clients.

CORE VALUES/OUR PHILOSOPHY

In carrying out Sinapi’s business operations, Board members, the Executive Director and all other staff and professionals are encouraged to observe the following four core values:

Commitment To The Poor

We are committed to serving the poor who are the main target of our operations.  We focus our energies and efforts to these people and provide demand/client-driven services to the poor at reasonable professional fees that meet our market expectations and provide adequate returns for operational and financial sustenance.

Stewardship

We are also committed to being good stewards of our own resources and those of our donors, clients, partners, collaborators, creditor and colleagues by exercising thoughtfulness and care in the use of any resource available to us at all times.  We are also committed to ensuring that, resources are judiciously committed to the purpose for they were earmarked after a careful cost and benefit analysis.  In all our endeavours, we strive for quality and seek to maximize or at least optimize opportunities available to us towards the fulfillment of our mission.  As a Christian organization, the Bible commands us to be good stewards.

Respect

For one reason or the other, society accords little or no respect for the poor but this needs to change.  In Sinapi, we accord much respect in all our dealings with donors, clients, partners, colleagues, collaborators and all others.  Our respect for everybody compels us to fully value and affirm the dignity and uniqueness of each client, donor, partner and so forth.  Our respect for everyone facilitates good relations with clients, which positively affect loan recovery.  In Sinapi we know and believe that respect is reciprocal.

Integrity

We do not compromise in sacrificing our integrity on any ground.  One of our strength as an organization is the integrity of our staff and this accounts for our image and good standing in the growing microfinance industry in Ghana and beyond.  We will do the right thing for the right people at right time and at the right place whether or not anyone will know.
